Why today: what moved your recovery

Your recovery is one number, but a lot goes into it. Why today shows which of your signals pushed it up or down this morning, in points of recovery.

On Today

The Why 52% recovery today card (with your number) sits above Tomorrow's recovery. It lists the three signals that moved your recovery most this morning. A mint bar to the right means it helped; an orange bar to the left means it cost you. Tap the card for the full view.

The full view

  • Your usual morning. "On a usual morning you'd be at 70%." That's where you'd land if every signal were at your normal.
  • One row per signal, biggest mover first, with this morning's value, your usual, and the points it added or took away:
  • HRV
  • Resting heart rate
  • Sleep
  • Respiratory rate
  • Skin temperature
  • Everything else: the part these signals don't explain, so the rows add up to your real score.
  • The sum: Usual morning, Net change and Today.

At the bottom it tells you how many mornings it learned from and which signal moves your recovery the most.

How it works

Each signal is compared with its own normal from your last 28 healthy mornings. From up to a year of your healthy mornings, ZONAL learns how much each one tends to move your recovery, and splits this morning's score into those pieces. A signal your band doesn't record, or that never changes, is skipped.

It's your own pattern, not WHOOP's formula, so the pieces won't match the WHOOP app.

While it's learning

Why today needs 60 mornings with every signal before it can split your score. Until then the card says "Still learning which signals move your recovery" and how many mornings are left.

Good to know. On a sick day, or a travel day that's left out, the Today card hides. The full view then explains your last healthy morning and says so at the top.

Questions

Why doesn't this match what WHOOP says?

WHOOP's recovery formula isn't public. Why today learns from your own history how your signals line up with your recovery, so it's a close read of your pattern, not WHOOP's math.

What does "Everything else" mean?

Some of your recovery isn't explained by these five signals. That leftover goes in its own row so the numbers add up to your real score.

Which signal matters most for me?

The line at the bottom of the full view names it, for example "HRV moves your recovery the most."
